2020 Artomaña Xarmant Txakoli de Álava
The small town of Amurrio sits in the upper Nervión Valley, in the mountainous interior of Álava, the largest and least populated of the Basque Country regions of northern Spain.

The climate here is rainy and cool, unlike so much of the rest of Spain, and the valley runs north-south, direct to the ocean, which channels the cool breezes that keep temperatures mild and wet year-round.

Txakoli is the Basque word for the wine made here and in the other regions of the Basque Country. In Álava in particular, production of txakoli was so low in the 1980s that Artomaña are considered one of the first producers to revitalize production, starting with their founding in 1988.

This 2020 is full of lemon rind with hints of grapefruit on the nose, sour white nectarine, white flower, and a bit of green flavor like lemongrass on the palate, along with a slightly sharp, high acid, rocky minerality on the finish. Great with salads, sushi rolls, boquerones, fresh fish, and savory pintxos with cream.
