2018 Troupis Fteri Agiorgitiko

The Troupis Winery is located in the mountain village of Mantineia, just west of Nemea. The family owns 16 acres, which they have been farming since the 1970s, originally founded by Tasos Troupis as a nursery for fruit trees and flowers.

They began bottling their own wine only in 2010, mostly for the indigenous white grape moschofilero, grown in the Mantineia appellation. The family source their agiorgitiko from vineyards in nearby Nemea.

Agiorgitiko, which refers to St George, is also sometimes called "Blood of Hercules", as the mythical hero did battle with the Lion of Nemea, and the wine's color lends itself to such imaginative designation. "Fteri" refers to a local fern, pictured on the label.

This 2018 agiorgitiko has dark pomegranate and blackberry, light, chewy tannins, and a lean dry finish with loads of black pepper. We'd drink it with beef stew, or veal fondue, or some such wintery fare (also dark chocolate).
