2019 4 Kilos Motor América
Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero are the force behind 4 Kilos. Francesc does the winemaking, Sergio the design and promotion. Francesc is a native Mallorcan who helped rescue the indigenous varietal callet from obscurity as part of the Anima Negra team in the late 90s, Sergio is a musician who makes sure native Mallorcan wines are marketed and feted as a homegrown success story.
This 2019 bottle is composed mostly of callet, along with manto negro (another native varietal), and monastrell (the Spanish name for mourvèdre). The "Motor América" label is in homage to Francesc's father, who worked in the auto industry. The name "cuatro kilos" refers to the initial investment made in the new wine company, 4 million pesetas (something like 24,000 euros).
This 2019 is floral with bright cranberry and a sour cherry finish. It's salty, with light black tea leaf tannins. Similar to other lean reds (like schiava) it's great with cured meats, jamón ibérico, or nutty cheeses, and rich salads.
