2020 Ca' Nova Colline Novaresi Vespolina

The father-daughter duo of Vittorio and Giada Codecasa founded Ca' Nova in 1996 after they took over an old property (complete with 17th Century farmhouse) in the small village of Bogogno, about 10 km from the southern shores of Lago Maggiore, and 20km from Ghemme and Gattinara (two DOCGs famous for their nebbiolo production). The winemakers are Gianluca Scaglione and Cristiano Garella.

Vespolina is indigenous to north Piedmont, and is an offspring of nebbiolo. Quite frequently the two varietals are planted together. Vespolina is a much lighter varietal, more of an appetizer version to the meaty and fully tannic nebbiolo.

This 2020 is very fruity up front, with candied raspberry and cranberry, some white pepper, then finished with bitter, fine tannins, and dry tobacco leaf (cigar box). This is also definitely a food wine, drink it with cured meats or terrine, mushroom pasta or other saucy dishes. Also a great pizza wine.
