2020 Grimaldi Verdicchio di Matelica
Tenuta Grimaldi is a winery in Matelica, in the eastern foothills of the Apennines, the long, steep mountain range that cuts pretty much all of Italy lengthwise in two. This is the central eastern part of the Marche, only about 25km to the Umbrian border.
The winery is now run by the brothers Federico and Alberto. Mirko Mattana is the winemaker. They make only verdicchio. The Grimaldi vineyards sit at around 1500-1800 ft. This means cool nights, and high acidity in the grapes.
This 2020 is floral, with lots of white flower, followed by tropical fruits and lemon curd on the palate, with some green veggies, green bell pepper, and a bit of shaved almond like albariño. It's divine with cheesy pastas, lemon pepper agnolotti, white pizzas, asparagus (one of the few wines to pair well with asparagus), peppery dishes and truffles.
