2018 Sergio Mottura Poggio della Costa

Sergio Mottura's vineyards are situated in the valley between the medieval mountain town of Civitella D'Agliano, and the Tiber River, which then flows some 100km south to Rome. One of the primary winemakers responsible for the resurgence of the local grechetto varietal, Sergio relocated from Piedmont to Lazio in his twenties to start farming and winemaking full time in this small region on the border between Lazio and Umbria.

Grechetto, though thought to come originally from Greece, as its name implies, is more or less indigenous to the area, having been documented in Orvieto wines from the late 13th century onward. The Mottura estate has been in the family since 1933, and Sergio now runs the estate with his son Giuseppe.

The 2018 Poggio della Costa is rich and full-bodied, with strong floral aromatics, like cedar-bark potpourri, a chalky, chewy mouthfeel, and lingering finish. Absolutely divine with crab cakes or creamy crab, mussels in garlic, and, of course, Lazio carbonara.
