2020 Ca'n Verdura 'Verdura'

Ca'n Verdura is an indie outfit out of central Mallorca, in the Binissalem DO appellation (one of only two regional DOs in Mallorca). Tomeu Llabrés is a literal garagiste, opening his small winery in a converted auto garage in 2012. He cut his chops at Anima Negra, and later with Francesc Grimalt at 4 Kilos, and like those two is focused on natural winemaking and highlighting indigenous varietals.

Mallorcan wine production dates to the 2nd Century BC, but in more recent centuries has become somewhat of a wine backwater. There's still a long way to go, particularly in planting more acreage of native vines, but lots of progress is being made by vintners like Tomeu.

Manto negro makes up about 60% of the blend for this wine, followed by the French varietals merlot and cabernet sauvignon (to give it structure, which it can often lack on its own), callet, and monastrell. This 2020 has rhubarb and stewed fruit up front, bitter herbs like rubbed sage, and a bit of a burnt, spiced finish, with deep tannins (thanks to the merlot and cab sauv). Grilled meats/sausages, gyros, rabbit stew, spiced soups, levantine cuisine, all perfect with this wine.
