2018 Diamantakos Naoussa Xinomavro

George Diamantakos is the third generation winemaker of the Diamantakos family, taking over the estate in 2005. The winery is located just to the east of the town of Naoussa, which itself sits at the foot of the Vermio Mountains towering above (lots of ski resorts in the Vermios).

George only makes two wines, both from indigenous varietals, preknadi (a very rare white grape) and xinomavro. Xinomavro is not only the flagship red of Naoussa (which was the first region in the country to achieve the appellation PDO status, in 1971), but is the flagship red of all of Greece. "Mavro" in Greek means "black", and multiple Greek red grapes have it as part of their name. "Xino" means sour.

Aromatic with raspberry and pomegranate, truly elegant on the palate, and a lengthy, lovely finish, with nice spice and fine tannins, and just a touch of bitterness and earth typical of the varietal. Drink it with some lamb, or meaty pasta, or various other rich and hearty Greek fare.
