2020 Guy Breton Régnié
Guy Breton is one of a small group of winemakers in the mid-1980s in Beaujolais (the region just south of Burgundy in eastern France, just north of the city of Lyon) to undertake a return to traditional winemaking techniques, a change of style for a wine which had become known for cheap, quaffable, bland and easy-drinking juice under the internationally-known label of "Beaujolais Nouveau".

Breton took over the family-run vineyards in 1986, and immediately began making wine himself instead of selling the grapes to the local cooperative, as his family had done up until that point. His winery and most of his vineyards lie around the town of Villié-Morgon, in the cru appellation of Morgon. Régnié is the westernmost of the ten Beaujolais cru appellations, and sits atop a series of hills, making it some of the highest altitude gamay grown in the Beaujolais.
This 2020 is the epitome of light-hearted gamay: aromatic raspberry with red current and plum on the palate, mineral driven, light tannins. Drink it with charcuterie or light pastas, and fowl of all shapes and sizes.
