2018 Domaine Rolet Arbois Poulsard
Domaine Rolet is located in the small Alpine village of Montigny-lès-Arsures, just north of the town of Arbois, and only 45 miles from the Swiss border. Jurassiens claim the Arbois to be the very first AOC in all of France, as it was among the first six appellations declared by the French government on May 15, 1936, "Arbois" alphabetically positioned to take home the title.

Poulsard is an ancient varietal native to the Jura hills, and has been cultivated since at least the 15th Century. The grape has thin skins and makes perfumed light-bodied wines with fine tannins, a true Alpine red. The Rolet family, after running the winery for 70 years, sold the operation in 2018, and the wines are now under the direction of head winemakers Cédric Ducoté and Chloé Weber.

This 2018 has tons of violet and rose petal on the nose, bright cranberry and candied cherry with an herby touch to the palate, and a super lean, light finish, with fine tannins. It spends a year in large used oak foudre, so has some nice structure. It's great with turkey, dark meat chicken, and duck, or else mushroom pasta or sautéed veggies.
