2020 Weingut Köfererhof Kerner
Weingut Köfererhof for generations farmed and provided grapes to the dominant local force in both viticultural and spiritual matters in the small alpine town of Novacella, the Abbazia (or Abbey) di Novacella. The monks at the abbey have made wine since the 12th Century and still do. Now in their third generation of stewardship of the Köfererhof estate, the Kershbaumer family (who took over in 1940) is currently led by Günter and Gaby Kershbaumer, who run the winery and, since 1995, bottle their own wines under the Köfererhof label.

Kerner is a hybrid grape. It was first bred in a lab in Lauffen, a small town in the Württemberg, in southwest Germany, in 1929, by August Herold, a German grape breeder. In his attempt to find a riesling-like grape that could provide better yields and withstand harsher climates, Herold crossed riesling with trollinger.

This 2020 has a round riesling-like nose, grapefruit and sour nectarine, a touch of lychee or mango, with a bit of a beeswax finish, but also nicely crisp and acidic. Drink it with cured meats, soft cheeses, and salads with tuna or other fish.
