2019 Bodegas Albamar Finca O Pereiro
The Finca O Pereiro is the main holding of only 2.5 hectares total owned by Xurxo (he sources the grapes for many of his other wines). Production is tiny (only 258 cases for O Pereiro in 2019). The vineyard was planted by Xurxo's father in 1984, but Xurxo added an extension in 2005 that was on more clay-heavy soils. This Finca O Pereiro bottling comes exclusively from this clay-heavy section of the vineyard.
The wine is aged in 100% stainless steel, but crucially with 6 to 7 months on the lees to give it a rounder, and a touch creamy, flavor. The unusually heavy clay content of the small section of O Pereiro from which the grapes come also serves to give the wine a great suppleness and weight, rare for albariño. A mazarico (the Galician name for the curlew) is depicted on the label, in homage to the bird which lives in and around the marshes.
This 2019 is mineral-driven, streaming with seashell minerality and saltiness. Pretty floral nose for an albariño, with honeysuckle/chamomile, then a burst of salted smoky lime (like a salty margarita on the rocks, if the rocks were actual rocks), distinctive raw almond and citrus palate, tart stone fruit, with flinty shell minerality and sea-salt for a finish. Drink it with fish crudo, ceviche, fresh and grilled fish of all kinds, and, of course, pulpo gallego.
