2020 Centopassi Giato Rosso

Centopassi is the viticultural arm of a Sicilian cooperative called Libera Terra. The winery is based in the town of Corleone, about an hour directly south of Palermo, perched on the Alto Belice Corleonese, a high plateau running north-south across the breadth of western Sicily.

Buying grapes from different co-op farmers, they work with all indigenous Sicilian varietals, including the two here: nero d'Avola and perricone. Nero d'Avola is the more fruit-forward, richer, juicier, of the two. Perricone, a much rarer varietal, even in Sicily, is a true native of the west, known for its high acidity and coarse tannins, and is used to make the fortified Marsala Rubino (also from western Sicily).

This 2020 is bright and fruity, with dark cherry and rose petal aromatics, fairly silky on the palate, a little tobacco leaf, and kind of a sour mash on the finish with a bright cranberry crunch. Medium-bodied with fine tannins, it's great with tomato sauce-based pastas, pizza, or spiced sausage.
